2016 Rose Parade Float Judge Tim Lindsay

Tim Lindsay as 2016 Tournament of Roses Parade Float Judge

We at Robinson Gardens are proud to announce that our very own Superintendent Tim Lindsay has been chosen to be one of three float judges for the 127th Tournament of Roses Parade held in Pasadena, California on New Years Day, January 1, 2016, beginning at 8:00 a.m. This year’s Rose Parade theme is titled, “Find Your Adventure.” Tim, along with the two other judges Tom Bowling, and Jodie Petersen, will grant awards based on criteria such as creative design, floral craftsmanship, artistic merit, computerized animation, thematic interpretation, floral and color presentation, and dramatic impact.

“Attending the parade on New Year’s Day has always been my family’s favorite way to start the year,” states Tim. “This year, I am delighted to participate in the long-held tradition. We will judge 44 floats and present 23 awards.”

Applicants for judges are solicited from around the country. Each candidate submits resumes to the judging committee for consideration and is informed of their appointments in early November.

“We have one day of training on the award categories and various aspects to consider while judging. Then we have two full days of judging,” Tim continues. “We use iPads and software developed by staff at JPL to sort out the categories and deliberations to determine winners.  It all culminates with the awards being announced by the judging committee and Tournament of Roses President Mike Matthiessen at 6:00 a.m. on New Year’s Day, on the front steps of the Wrigley Mansion, the headquarters for the parade.”

“These floral masterpieces are designed, built, and decorated by dedicated teams who put incredible effort into perfecting their fantastic floats,” said Mike Matthiessen. “Our esteemed panel of judges will use their diverse backgrounds and talents to analyze each float and identify those elements that help us best celebrate the many ways in which we may find our adventure in the coming year.”
