For me, Labor Day is the official end of summer. While many schools start prior to this weekend, when I was in school, we started the school year the week after Labor Day. It was bittersweet – seeing all my friends after a summer hiatus, and leaving the fun, carefree days of summer behind. I am an easterner, so Labor Day also meant fall in the truest sense of the word – changing colors on the leaves and changing weather in preparation of the winter resting of our plants.
Here at the Gardens, I think our plants breathe a sigh of relief that the intense summer heat is lessening. They flourish in the warm sun and cooler nights. It seems everything is blooming again!
With a strong sense of purpose, we are welcoming fall at FRG. We are excited that the Patron Gala is back after five years, this year honoring longtime supporters of the Gardens, Harvey and Laura Alpert with Kerstin Royce and Patti Reinstein, recipients of our Camellia Award. Such stellar headliners! “Moonlight Serenade” is certain to entertain you under the stars.
Our fall is full of events – October 1st is our first education lecture with Victoria Kastner. October 17th is a most special event in lieu of the annual Membership Luncheon with an evening of wine and small bites followed by an exceptional slide presentation on Virginia and Harry Robinson, their love, and the Gardens they created. A beautiful history of the estate and gardens will be presented by Steven Keylon, editor of the Eden magazine. We are so fortunate to have him at VRG. Our September Book Club is reading a book on Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford, and we have another architectural lecture with Tim Barber on November 7th – an in-depth look at the Pool Pavilion. Take a look at the calendar, and you can see the dates are filling out fast – don’t miss out on all we have for you to take in at the Gardens.
As with our plants, take a deep breath and welcome the serenity of fall before we start the hectic months of the holiday season! We would love to see you in person at the Gardens.
