Spotlight on Clare Wagner
Each month we spotlight a volunteer, staff member, docent, donor, or sponsor of Virginia Robinson Gardens (VRG) — those that have made an impact on the organization. We want to let you know about these wonderful people and corporations that give so much to the Virginia Robinson Gardens and to the community, and what they do that is so impactful. This month, we spotlight Clare Wagner, a dedicated Friend of Robinson Gardens Board Member. Clare, as part of the Membership Committee, did a fabulous job on the New Member’s Handbook. She directed the whole project, and it is a fantastic and invaluable resource on anything you would like to know about VRG and the Friends. We asked her these three questions: 1. Fellows Visit to “Nineteen Nineteen,” the Centennial Exhibition at the Huntington Library
Curator James Glisson gave a very informative and fascinating lecture to the Fellows of Robinson Gardens on the exhibition, also curated by Jennifer A. Watts, “Nineteen Nineteen” at the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens on October 29, 2019. This major exhibition of more than 250 objects celebrates the Huntington Centennial, as the museum was founded in 1919. James said, “The Huntington houses 11 million items. With a few exceptions, the show exhibits items that were acquired, exhibited, made, copyrighted, or altered in 1919.” Loosely organized into five sections depicting themes of Fight, Return, Map, Move, and Build, “the exhibition strives to re-create the experience of history as you move through it,” explained James. With the war ending, and the presence of a flu epidemic, high inflation, race riots, and labor strikes everywhere, 1919 was a turbulent year.
