Our Garden Tour Star Alena Kvassov of Awesome Bloom Decor

From time to time, we highlight “Our Garden Tour Stars” — landscape architects, florists, and interior designers who have participated at our annual Garden Tour and Showcase Estate at The Virginia Robinson Gardens. We want to let you know about these very talented designers, their inspirations, and their creations.

This month, we are featuring florist Alena Kvassov of Awesome Bloom Decor. At the 2025 Garden Tour, along with Yana Polshina of Vespera Florals, Alena decorated the Master Bedroom and Morning Room. A gorgeous bridal-themed floral display complete with a wedding dress greeted visitors in the Morning Room. They also enhanced Virginia’s Master Bedroom with elegant non-sleeping Asiatic lilies and a beautiful and delicate arrangement of lavender and white flowers in front of the bed which added to the luxurious ambience of the room.

We asked Alena these five questions:

1. How did you decide to become a floral designer?

In 2016, I found myself at a deeply personal crossroads. One chapter of my life had quietly closed, and I was standing in the uncertainty of what would come next. Despite having two university degrees in sociology and marketing, I felt completely disconnected from that path — it no longer inspired me.

Creativity has always been my natural language. I intuitively feel color, space, and texture. My grandmother had a large garden filled with extraordinary flowers, and blooms were always present in my life and my home. Flowers felt familiar, almost like a memory I carried with me.

I began arranging bouquets without any expectations. For me, it became a form of meditation — a moment of calm and focus. The more I created, the deeper I fell in love with the process. And at some point, I realized that I was truly good at it.

That quiet, intuitive beginning turned into a profession. Today, nearly ten years later, I am an event floral designer, still guided by the same feeling that first drew me to flowers.

    2. Where do you find your inspiration?

First and foremost, I find my inspiration in nature. I love observing its forms, movement, and the way colors naturally interact with one another. Nature has an effortless intelligence that constantly inspires me. But in truth, life itself is one great source of inspiration — if you allow yourself to notice it. I always say: look around, stay curious, and analyze what you see. Inspiration is everywhere when you are truly present.

    3. Can you please share some photos of your favorite floral arrangement(s) and/or projects you have worked on?

    4. What is the book that inspires you the most?

One of the books that inspires me the most is The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It is a story about life, love, and responsibility. Although it is written as a fairytale, it conveys the most essential values of our world with remarkable depth and clarity through its characters.

For me, this book has been a lifelong guide — a gentle reminder of what truly matters.
