Dr. Toni Bowers

Dr. Bowers is a Professor in the Department of English Literature at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving her doctorate at Stanford University.  Her undergraduate studies were at the University of Southern California and Houghton College.  She specializes in British literature and culture from Charles II’s restoration in 1660 to the French Revolution and is a Core Faculty Member for Penn’s Gender Studies program.  She publishes and teaches on 17^th and 18^th century British writing by and about women, ideologically driven and partisan political writing of that time and place.  Dr. Bowers has extensively dozens of essays in scholarly journals, and published Force or Fraud: British Seduction Stories and the Problem of Resistance, 1660-1760 (OUP, 2011) and The Politics of Motherhood: British Writing and Culture, 1660-1760 (CUP 1996.)

Dr. Bowers will enlighten and delight us with a biographical talk that situates Charlie Chaplin on Summit Drive in early 20^th century Los Angeles.  She will give a brief review of his life story before and after his Beverly Hills years, but will concentrate on the years in Beverly Hills, the period of some of his greatest achievements.
