Ruth Shellhorn: Mid-Century Landscape Architecture in Southern California

Please join us on October 22nd at 1:30pm for Kelly Comras’ illustrated talk and a short film about influential landscape architect Ruth Shellhorn. During the mid-century era, Shellhorn created a wide range of landscape designs for commercial, civic, and private clients. Her projects include the iconic Bullocks department stores and Fashion Square shopping centers; the original landscape design for Disneyland’s Town Square, Main Street and Plaza Hub gardens; a master landscape plan for the UC Riverside campus; and over two hundred gardens and estates throughout the Southland.

Author and landscape architect Kelly Comras interviewed Shellhorn extensively and arranged for Shellhorn’s collection of professional papers to be donated to UCLA Special Collections before Shellhorn’s death in 2006. A book signing for Comras’ recent publication, Ruth Shellhorn, will follow the presentation.
