“Rediscover the Robust Fragrance and Allure of Roses from a By-Gone Era”

Roses play a significant role in World History, rose cultivation began over 5,000 years ago, most likely in China. For over 1,000 years, roses arrived in western Europe via The Silk Road. In Rome, they were used as confetti at celebration, for medicinal purposes, and as a source of perfume. In the fifteenth century, the conflict in England, between York and Lancaster, was coined “The War of the Roses.” By the seventeenth century English Royalty considered rose water as legal tender.

In a modern world of over hybridization, rose breeders have lost track of one of the major reasons roses are grown; the allure of their scent!

Discover the olfactory delight of the robust scent of old roses. In this workshop, we will look at “tried and true” old rose varieties and explore sources of how to obtain them.
Demonstrations will include how to plant and care for these timeless beauties. Join us with a pair of hand pruners and gloves. We will practice corrective pruning techniques that will keep your rose bushes healthy, productive and beautiful!
