Spotlight on Barbara Remedios

Each month, we spotlight a volunteer, staff member, docent, donor, or sponsor of The Virginia Robinson Gardens (VRG) — those that have made an impact on the organization. We want to let you know about these wonderful people and corporations that give so much to The Virginia Robinson Gardens and to the community, and what they do that is so impactful.

This month, we spotlight Barbara Remedios, Member Relations & Administrative Manager at VRG. She is an invaluable and wonderful asset to the Friends, and in the words of the founder of the Friends, Joan Selwyn, “Barbara is our ‘Wonder Woman.’ She is dedicated to Robinson Gardens and meets every challenge with speed and efficiency. Barbara brings her zest for travel and love of life to her office, making it a pleasure to work with her.”

1. How did you first learn about VRG, and what inspired you to become part of VRG?

In 2021, after four and a half years of living in Europe (Bulgaria and Poland), I returned to Los Angeles and needed a new job.  I saw the posting for a staff person for the Friends. With several years of non-profit experience plus a master’s degree in Historic Preservation, working for a non-profit that supports a historic estate seemed like the perfect fit. So, I applied, interviewed, and got the job!

2. What is your role – how do you contribute to VRG?

As the staff person for the Friends, in addition to handling administrative tasks for the organization, I liaise with pretty much everyone: members, board members, committee chairs, volunteers, and LA County staff to help organize and execute programs, events, and other initiatives here at VRG. With so much happening at the Gardens, every day has a different set of ‘to-dos’ which definitely keeps things interesting.

3. Can you please share a favorite VRG memory with us?

My favorite thing about VRG has been attending our enrichment classes on various plants: orchids, roses, succulents, herbs, etc. While my first love will always be architecture, I have really enjoyed learning more about gardens and gardening.

4. Please add any additional information you would like to share!

The picture I chose to include is one of me in front of a waterfall in Iceland. If you can only know one thing about me, then know that I LOVE TO TRAVEL! I’ve traveled to over 50 different countries and can’t wait to get to the next 50!
