Spotlight on Dorothy Kamins

Each month we spotlight a volunteer, staff member, donor or sponsor of Virginia Robinson Gardens (VRG) — those that have made an impact on the organization. We want to let you know a little bit about these wonderful people and corporations that give so much to the Virginia Robinson Gardens and to the community, and what they do that is so impactful.

This month, we spotlight Dorothy Kamins, our distinguished Patron and Angel member. The Friends are so grateful for her tremendous support for Robinson Gardens.

Mrs. Kamins on numerous occasions has generously opened her beautiful garden for guests to visit during our annual Garden Tour. The first occasion featured her historical home and terraced gardens. The second occasion she opened her garden was to feature the new garden, and supporting structures and water features on the property they purchased next door to the original property. Also, very generously, Mrs. Kamins collaborated with Superintendent Timothy Lindsay on the “ins” and “outs” of building a new wildlife pond in the King Palm Forest at VRG to share her extensive experience after building multiple water features in her amazing gardens.

We asked her these three questions:

  1. How did you first learn about VRG, and what inspired you to become a Friend?

Driving on Lexington to Beverly to Coldwater to the 134 to Claremont to see a friend, there was a flurry of cars parked and parking with the ladies in colorful hats walking up the hilly roadway. I was curious to know what was occurring, but I continued on, thinking on my return I will check it out. I did return around 4:30. I spoke to one of the ladies and was told about the Robinson Gardens. Fascinated, I left my name and phone to be contacted. I was contacted and began receiving information about coming events and a luncheon at which persons interested in joining were invited. Of course, I joined, and it was and is one of the best and most gratifying decisions of my life.

What’s your role – How do you contribute to VRG?

As a member of the Gardens, my physical participation is limited; however, I feel an obligation to the legacy left by Mrs. Robinson to perpetuate the beauty of a home and garden, both of which are well loved. This home and garden are always in need of assistance; I provide some of that assistance financially. It is my thank you to the Robinson Gardens community of members.

  1. Can you share a favorite VRG memory with us?

I was honored many years ago with the Camellia Award. It still is a memorable occasion with warm thoughts.
