Spotlight on Ellen Levitt

Each month we spotlight a volunteer, staff member, docent, donor, or sponsor of Virginia Robinson Gardens (VRG) — those that have made an impact on the organization. We want to let you know about these wonderful people and corporations that give so much to the Virginia Robinson Gardens and to the community, and what they do that is so impactful.

This month, we spotlight Ellen Levitt, a dedicated Friend of Robinson Gardens Board Member and as chair of the Restoration Committee, oversaw beautiful restorations.

We asked her these three questions:

1. How did you first learn about VRG, and what inspired you to become a Friend?

I first learned about the VRG from Gordon Curtis, my landscape architect at the time. He had a home that was on the tour that year, and he brought me as his guest. I was enchanted by the gardens and the VRG and soon after became a member.

2. What’s your role – How do you contribute to VRG?

I have worn different hats through the years. For several years, I partnered with Marcella Ruble to head up the Education events. Many years back, I co-chaired the Garden Tour with Claudia Deutsch. For countless years, I shared the responsibility with Jeanne and coordinated the floral and interior designers for the Garden Tour.

For the past two years, I have been responsible for the Concierge level at the Gardens during Garden Tour with the generous support of floral designer Peter Otero and the subsequent year, the enormously generous event planner Mindy Weiss and florist Celio’s Designs.

My current role as chairperson for the Restoration Committee for the Gardens began with the Kitchen in the house. Each subsequent project – including the China Room, the new Friends Office, the Kitchen in the Pool Pavilion and in the House, the Card Room, and the furnishings in the Pool Pavilion — has been a happy collaboration with Tim Lindsay.

3. Can you share a favorite VRG memory with us?

Along the way, I have worked with several enormously talented and generous designers who have donated their time to these projects including Jeffrey Alan Marks, Catherine Fellowes, and Cynthia Carlson.

I have so many wonderful memories, great friends… so much fun!
