Spotlight on Francine Pam

Each month, we spotlight a volunteer, staff member, docent, donor, or sponsor of the Virginia Robinson Gardens (VRG) — those that have made an impact on the organization. We want to let you know about these wonderful people and corporations that give so much to The Virginia Robinson Gardens and to the community, and what they do that is so impactful.

This month, we spotlight Francine Pam, a dedicated Friend of Robinson Gardens Member. Francine was a founding faculty member (5th grade) at Brentwood Lower School from 1995 to 2018 where she taught Friends members Patti Elias’ children and Kerstin Royce’s grandchildren!

1. How did you first learn about VRG, and what inspired you to become a Friend?

My sister-in-law, Ann Petersen, has been a member for quite some time. For many years, Ann shared stories about Virginia’s fascinating life & the beauty of the Gardens. When life began to open up after being home during the pandemic, I knew this would be the perfect time to take the garden tour. I was so delighted with what was behind the gates of VRG! Seeing the alluring landscape & hearing the love story of Virginia & Harry was wonderful!

After taking the outdoor watercolor class this past summer, I felt a sense of peace surrounded by the lush setting at VRG. When I was giving Ann the details of the watercolor class, she said, “You must become a member! You will meet amazing people & the Children’s Science Program Committee is right up your alley!”

2. What is your role – how do you contribute to VRG?

When I met Patti, Kerstin, & Barbara, the Children’s Program seemed like the perfect fit. I spent my career as an educator, so as I learned about the VRG Children’s Science Program, I was ready to go! Working with “the ladies” to help add more schools to the already long list of those participating in the program has been satisfying & enlightening!  In addition to the many new schools joining this season, several other non-profits that help kids are excited to offer the VRG science materials to those they serve. In the short time I’ve been on this committee, I have been inspired by these women who truly know how to get things done!

3. Can you please share a favorite VRG memory with us?

I attended the new member evening with the architectural historian Steven Keylon & Archive Chair Patty Elias. The social part of the night was so lovely; it was delightful to meet other members & enjoy the incredible setting. Hearing about the life & times of Virginia Robinson during the program was interesting & memorable. What a magical life Virginia & Harry shared!
